Things That Make You Go Hmmm: Legit "Nigger in a Northface" vid

Hailing from Chicago, 19 year old Legit makes music that, no pun intended, is legit. "Nigger in a Northface" is a critical analysis of interracial (Black man/white woman because context matters) romances in the 21st century. Low key spoiler alert: I gave an eye roll at the ending ( if you know me then you'll understand why). Young Wonder definitely did his thing with the visuals because it felt more like a short film than a music video. Legit's Coloring Outside the Lines mixtape is out now!!!

And I hate being with your friends because if you bring 'em
I get stared at like an exhibit at a museum

Let Me Put You On: Tia London

I love stumbling upon Femcees. No, it literally makes my day. And when one has a track dedicated to women who aren't basic, that makes her BVR worthy. Tia London of Traxter Inc has an amazing LP, Love Junkie, out right now so go and get it! But until you get it, here's a little taste (forgive her for the minimal auto-tuning...)

Yeah he dig my style but he really love my intellect
Nothing like them chicks he run across the internet

Kanye West and Jay Z - No Church In The Wild (music video)

Enjoy America!

Things That Make You Go Hmmm: No Church in the Wild (Video)

Kanye West and Jay Z - No Church In The Wild (music video) from High5Collective on Vimeo.

By far the BEST music video that you'll never see on television.

[Hook: Frank Ocean]
Human beings in a mob
What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a God?
What's a God to a non-believer who don't believe in anything?
Will he make it out alive? Alright, alright, no church in the wild

[Jay-Z]
Tears on the mausoleum floor, blood stains the Colosseum doors
Lies on the lips of priests, Thanksgiving disguised as a feast
Rolling in Rolls Royce Corniche
Only the doctors got this, I’m hiding from police
Cocaine seats, all white like I got the whole thing bleached
Drug dealer chic, I’m wondering if a thug’s prayers reach
Is Pious pious cause God loves pious?
Socrates asked whose bias do y'all seek?
All for Plato, screech, I’m out here balling, I know yall hear my sneaks
Jesus was a carpenter, Yeezy he laid beats
Hova flow the Holy Ghost, get the hell up out your seats, preach

[Hook]

[Bridge: The-Dream]
I live by you, desire
I stand by you, walk through the fire
Your love is my scripture
Let me into your encryption

[Kanye West]
Coke on her black skin
Make a stripe like a zebra, I call that jungle fever
You will not control the threesome
Just roll the weed up until I get me some
We formed a new religion
No sins as long as there’s permission
And deception is the only felony
So never fuck nobody without telling me
Sunglasses and Advil, last night was mad real
Sun coming up, 5 a.m., I wonder if they got cabs still?
Thinking 'bout the girl in all leopard
Who was rubbing the wood like Kiki Shepherd
Two tattoos one read "No Apologies"
The other said "Love is Cursed by Monogamy"
It’s something that the pastor don’t preach
It’s something that a teacher can’t teach
When we die the money we can’t keep
But we probably spend it all cause the pain ain’t cheap, preach

Hook: Frank Ocean]
Human beings in a mob
What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a God?
What's a God to a non-believer who don't believe in anything?
Will he make it out alive?
Alright, alright,
No church in the wild (x4)

VIDEO: Yelawolf on white rappers using the N word

w

What did Yelaworlf have to say?

“I mean - I’m from the South, and that shit don’t fly. In Alabama … put it this way, there are grandparents alive today whose parents went through a war, you know … we’re just out of the slave trade. It was a very real, very real situation. And you know, you don’t take that shit lightly.

Especially … hip hop, and american music culture is Black Culture. Don’t ever get it fucked up. You … know your roots, know where the fuck you’re getting this music from and respect it. And don’t embarrass white people and white rappers by doing that dumb shit. By dropping the n-bomb you thinking you’re all cool and shit, you’re gonna find yourself slapped up, and it might be by a white boy. You know, cause you ain’t gonna embarrass me around my people like that. It ain’t gonna happen.

Whenever I would have said that around the house, just playing around, my mom would slap the SHIT out of me. That was just it. My mom did not play that shit. Because, you know, I’m from Alabama man, we got … this don’t fly like that, you know? And the same person who would slap the shit out of me if I was to say that, is the same person to wear a dixie flag on her shirt. It’s a culture that a lot of people don’t understand, but where I’m from that shit don’t fly and I ain’t backing it. That’s all I gotta say about that.”

Chip Tha Ripper (New Music)

"The Truth" will be on his Tell Ya Friends project. I'm offically excited.

Fluoride in our tap water
That's what Hitler used to keep the Jews dumber
Real talk you can look it up
Look how long we've had Google, niggas still dumb as fuck

-Artemis J

HOT OR NOT: Trigga (Trey Songz) "Whoever Else"

Trey Songz goes by Trigga when he raps. Which oddly enough rhymes with...let me stop. “Whoever Else” is off of his upcoming free rap release #Lemmeholdatbeat2 which will be released at the same time as his R&B mixtape Anticipation 2 on November 1st.

I really don't fuck with niggas so I'm done after I speak And hate starts with an H because it comes after a G

Let Me Put You On: Nitty Scott

Nitty Scott is as retro as they come so you know I'm a fan. It's been a LONG time since I came across a Femcee that I could co-sign to. I'm definitely putting my John Hancock next to this one. "Auntie Maria's Crib" is off of her next project Doobies x Popsicle Sticks dropping soon.

I'm trying to stimulate my mental
Rap so bad we just bump the instrumental
Copy cats can't copy rap so they trace it
My pen game like a blunt you should face it

- Artemis J

HOT OR NOT: Wale "Best Night Ever"

It's slowly growing on me but I can't decide if it's download worthy just yet. Hmmm what do you think? Wale's sophomore album Ambitious, his first under Ross' Maybach Music Group, drops November 1st.

Everything got a flaw, we desire perfection

Mayer Hawthorne (New Music)

"The Walk" is an ode to those long leaded heart breakers. Hawthorne really needs to go on tour with Cee-lo. They are really bringing back that Happy Days/Motown soul back. How Do You Do is scheduled to release on October 11th.

From the moment that I met you I thought you were fine, so fine
But you're shitty fucking attitude has got me changing my mind

Murs (New Video)

I must admit I wasn't really checking for Murs prior to this track. It seems as though a haircut and heartbreak can do wonders for a man. "Remember 2 Forget" will definitely appear on the soundtrack to my life. Also, Ski Beatz makes this easy to stroll to. Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation is due out October 11th.

Last night I sat down to cry, over you
Then I stopped to ask myself why, over you
And snapped out of it and got on with my day cuz
My life's been a lot better since the break up

Let Me Put You On: Levar Allen

So our neighbors to the North have once again thrown a hot young talent our way. I have no idea how I stumbled across Levar Allen on YouTube but I'm definitely glad I did. Saying he does a great job at covering some of pop's greatest hits is an understatement. He literally makes the tracks his own and in some instances, as shown below, proves to make a joint better than the original. Follow, subscribe, support!

Here's an original. This is TOO cleaver for such a boring ass game.

HOT OR NOT: Pleasure P

BahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. *wipes tears* yes he did begin this song with a portion of Clifton Powell's monologue from Dead Presidents. There is so much WRONG with this song that it's so right *sigh* oh so right. I blame Lil' Wayne.

She had a lot of niggas that couldn't go on forever
She never had a real orgasm until I taught her how to fuck

I was the coach she was just the rookie
Now she a pro at throwing back that pussy
I hope you like what I taught her
Now she all shaved up no Harry Potter

-Artemis J

Let Me Put You On: Bridget Kelly

We all know Bridget Kelly must be talented if she's signed to Roc Nation however, this song did absolutely nothing for me. I would've preferred to read it as a poem since lyrically it's hot. Regardless of that, she KILLS it on this acoustic cover. Can you tell that Frank Ocean wrote this? Makes so much sense now.

It won't ever get old, not in my soul, not in my spirit keep it alive
We'll go down this road till it turns from color to black and white

-Artemis J

Don't Call It A Comeback: One Chance

I'm a tad too old for boy bands but One Chance was always that guilty pleasure of mine. These
Chicago natives have been jerked around for years but hopefully T-Pain won't pull a J records and shelve their debut that's rumored to be dropping later this year. They first popped on the scene back in '06 with "Look At Her" and I'm assuming that they got tired of just staring at women because now they're back with "Sexin' on You". Sidebar...does anyone want to talk about how strong the product placement was? I mean damn, did Nuvo PAY to shoot the video? Also, would anyone like to discuss how the "let's give them shots of straight alcohol and lock them in a sweaty ass room" concept? No one? Ok...well their mixtape Ain't No Room For Talkin' is out now.

Look at you shaking you can't control what you do
Lickin' so much like we swimming in a pool

-Artemis J

Around The Way: London

It's a treat to come across a hip hop track that makes you feel good both mentally and phyicallly. Definitely adding this to my cardio playlist. I see you Chrome.

Nobody wants to go the long way
I do it twice and do it my way

Let Me Put You On: Cori B

It seems as though Willow Smith isn't the only one playing for Team MyDaddyCanRapAndICanSing. Snoop's daughter Cori B is picking up the mic and isn't that bad. The way I see it, Willow can have Disney and Cori can have Nickelodeon and I can still be worth less than them. Everyone wins!

Pay attention, I can show you
How to do things my way

- Artemis J

Auburn "Hello" (Video)

The video, lyrics, and artists are all certified in my book. Auburn can not only sing ("La la la") but has a fly flow. Rumor has it she'll be dropping a studio album later this year.

Walkin out cold stones baby he was stone cold
Saw him looking at me stairing harder than mofo

Why you listening to your friends?
They dont wanna see us be.
Boy You better take it slow
Or I'll be history

-Artemis J

HOT OR NOT: YC

*SIGH* It's just SO DAMN CATCHY. Who can't see themselves pregamming to this?

I know I know I know I know I know I know
I know I know I know I know I know I know

Artemis J

New Music: Melanie Fiona

I'm actually excited for Fiona's next album The MF Life (dropping this November). This track makes me think of The Weeknd. Ohhhh I'm forcing these 2 to go on tour together.

Swear this man is begging me to leave him
Getting sick of being so mistreated
Another night without, without his arms around me

-Artemis J

HOT OR NOT: Daniel Beddingfield

Daniel hasn't dropped a studio album since I was a Frosh...in high school. Well now he's back...with dancehall!!! I think it's a cute little jam but that's my opinion, what's yours?

We got caught in the fire, dark wins out everytime

Let Me Put You On: DJ Chose

First off, I LOVE the visuals. On some corny sentimental ish it makes my heart smile to see artists rep their city, especially when they first start out. Lyrically and visually this track is too intimate to pass over. Subscribe, support, follow.

Pioneers, inventors be the niggas we replacin'
If they don't let me in my spot then baby trust me I'mma take it

-Artemis J

Let Me Put You On: Young Rocky

I don't know why I see myself running around Stop & Shop behaving all reckless with this track in my ear. Young Rocky may promote his youthfulness but his flow is definitely mature. Not to mention his ad libs are too funny. "Don't ask about me, just ask me." Subscribe, support, and follow.

I'm counting all this money but I rather count my blessings
It's funny how the small shit leaves a nigga stressing

Kid Cudi "No One Believes Me" (Video)

On August 19th Fright Night (which is a remake of an 80s flick) hits theaters and it's about a vampire and Vegas and some high school shit. Whatever, it's basically Disturbia meets The Lost Boys. I'll only see it because McLovin is in it...oh and because Colin Farrell has still got it. All that matters is Cudder has made a video for "No One Believes Me" which will be featured on the soundtrack and it's awkward yet full of pure human emotion, just like Cudi. SWOON.

I know that something is wrong here
I can feel it but no one believes me
I know that something is strange here
I can sense it but no one believes me

Peeped my boy Googling how to pick a lock? Hilarious.

-Artemis J

Let Me Put You On: Starboy Nathan

Black Brits *grabs MLK fan* oh Black Jesus. Truth be told, I really wasn't checking for Starboy but once I stumbled on his acoustic video? SWOON. These are definitely the cool kids I would pregame with. "Hangover" is off of his upcoming sophomore album 3D- Determination, Dedication, Desire.

V.I.P. living like a rockstar
Now she's gripping on me like handle bars

- Artemis J

HOT OR NOT: Teedra Moses

As the First Lady of Rick Ross' Maybach Music Label a lot is expected of Ms. Moses. She's already known for her songwriting skills ("Dip It Low" and "Here We Go" to name a few) but as a singer? I don't know. She doesn't lack talent but Wale's verse was definitely needed. Lawd, that double bass is fire. This is my opinion, what's yours?

"Another Luvr", both the original and the remix, can be found on her Luxurious Undergrind mixtape. Her album The Lioness drops sometime next year.

Loosing myself inside of love that was unreal
Never thought the day would come when I feel how I feel right now

-Artemis J

Kanye West & Jay-Z "Otis" (Video)

I'm still processing the fact that Aziz Ansari is in this video. However, they get mad points for the donation at the end.

Luxury rap, the Hermes of verses
Sophisticated ignorance, write my curses in cursive

Driving Benzes, wit’ no benefits
Not bad huh? For some immigrants
Build your fences, we diggin’ tunnels
Can’t you see? We gettin’ money up under you

Oh and just in case you were curious about the song that was sampled...

I know she's waiting just anticipating
the thing that you'll never never possess
no no no but while she there waiting
try just a little bit of tenderness

Things That Make You Go Hmmm: Lil' B "R.I.P. The Rap Game" Video

This almost made me forget "Wonton Soup"...and "Charlie Sheen"...and "Dr. Phil"...and "Mel Gibson"...and "Bill Bellamy"...almost. Keep cooking meals like these Master Chef.

I don't want awards, don't want the fucking like

BlueTube: Black Dynamite the Animated Series

Adult Swim isn't playing. Michael Jai White. Tommy Davidson. Kym Whitley. And don't get me started on the graphics ohhhhh wow. Here's a trailer from the movie it's based off of. Black Dynamite premieres Spring 2012. I'm not saying that it's a little of a coincidence that when The Boondocks ain't around...let me stop...

-Artemis J

Monday, August 8, 2011

HOT OR NOT: Nicole Scherzinger

Granted, the song is a tad catchy, but I feel as though she stole from both Katy Perry and Kelly Rowland and the result was this. Let me be honest, I prefer to watch her than listen to her. Yup, I said it. My thoughts, what's yours?

"Wet" is off of Killer Love which is out now.

If you touch me there, please beware you can start up a fire
I don't mind if you take me home, cool me off in the shower

-Artemis J

Let Me Put You On: Ella Varner

Ella Varner is bringing back that good good R&B. J. Cole isn't that bad on the chorus either. Just a cute song to blast in homeroom for that special one in your life.

But you're so classic that I want you more than my Adidas
All the Bs are getting at you because your honey is sweeter

-Artemis J

Let Me Put You On: Kris Kasanova

There's so much passion when he spits that I swear I got chills. These visuals are poetic. Here's a taste of his next project, War Paint.

X marks the spot, by any means necessary
I'mma be legendary
They told me my future would have nothing but commissary
I'm making history, mention me every February

-Artemis J

Cee-Lo Green "Cry Baby" (Video)

Jaleel White as Cee-Lo and a 1950s theme shot on an obvious constructed set? Honestly, what else do you need to make an AMAZING video? This is the perfect anthem for anyone rocking a Team Heartbreak jersey. Just saying...

I bet if you try, you could live without me
I really don't know why you bother to cry about be

-Artemis J

Hot Mess Of The Week: Hosea Chanchez

I don't understand how actors can have amazing careers and decide to make a fool of themselves by branching off into other fields. Case in point, Hosea Chanchez, better known as Malik from The Game, believes that he can...um..."rap". Poor thang. To make matters worse this video has been FLAGGED on YouTube. Jinkies. He's fione and all but I don't know if I can let this one go. This is my opinion, what's yours?

If you ain't got no back
Then step to the side like you got sidetracked
I sneeze at you (achoo) like
I'm allergic to flat booties, gesundheit

BlueTube: Deshawn Raw

Mr. Deshawn is simply HILARIOUS. I'm a huge fan of parodies especially when they're satirical. Here's some of his work. Be sure to support, subscribe, and follow.

I'm wild, I'm crazy, I can't be tamed
I drive all alone in the carpool lane

Sweet dollar tea from McDonalds, I drink that
Super hot fire, I spit that
Two and Half Men, I watch that

-Artemis J

Like what you see? Well don't stop here.

Bluetube: Joss Stone on Leno

I don't know how I feel about the barefoot singing but hey her voice is worth it. I would say this is an example of funk rock. Here's her performing on The Tonight Show. "Karma" is off of LP1 which drops on the 26th. If you're like me and had some difficulties understanding her with...I GOT YOU HOMIE.

You could've tried a little harder baby
You could've been a little smarter baby

Let Me Put You On - Shanaz Dorsett

Hey guys! Laydee TraceY here...

This is a shout to the ninties babies. Underground songstress Shanaz Dorsett does an awesome cover of Groove Theory's "Tell Me." This is definitely on my old school playlist and I love well executed covers (and musicians from my home!)

If you like what you hear, Shanaz already has an EP, Above The Clouds available now for FREE download

Since 2008, Shanaz Dorsett has linked with various music-makers from around the globe (thanks, internet!), most notably producers Remot (Mick Boogie, Donny Goines, U-N-I, Chipp Tha Ripper, Dutchmassive, Cy Marshall Law) and EOM (of Wax & EOM’s Liquid Courage, Shad, Classified, Chamillionaire, Dumbfounded, The MudKids, Random aka Mega Ran). However this time around, she went to the crates for some inspiration.

Above the Clouds Volume 1 is a 5 song EP composed of this soulful British Songstress voice over classic DJ PREMIER productions. She blissfully sings over “So Ghetto,” “Nas is Like,” “Boom,” “Watch How It Go Down,” and “That White.” The EP is perfect for the curious minds who might wonder what R&B vocals sound like on the full-course meal of a Premier production (Yes, yes, Craig David, Laura Ibizor, D’angelo were on original Preem productions!). And while the vocals certainly compliment the beat, it is evident that Premier certainly created a formula for diversity, longevity, and multiplicity with his production.

This EP serves as a homage to the greatest producer of all time, but also as a coming out party for a singer who is sure to remain on our radar for the future.

Let Me Put You On: Overdoz

This is the funniest vid I've seen in a LONG time and the song is quite relatable. The fellas of Overdoz (Tube, Cream, Sleezy, and Kent) hail from Inglewood and have proved to be talented enough to blend hip hop with humor. *Golf Clap*. I personally love the nod to silent film comedies and the assortment of costumes. "Pasadena" is off of Live For, Die For which is out right now.

Had a Disney girl, a big thick red bone
She left me so cold in the D, she dead wrong

New Colbie Caillat feat. Common

My mind is always blown when artists make songs about songs. Go figure. This is such a cute summer jam. Something so sing along to while driving with the windows down. Common even tried to hit some notes. Good for him. "Favorite Song" is off of All of You which drops Tuesday.

I wanna be your favorite song
You can turn it up, play me all night long

-Artemis J

New Music: Theophilus London

He's back at it again. I can't wait for that debut to drop. *SIGH* Patience woman, PATIENCE. "No Particular One" has London singing over a Motown island beat. "Field of Dreams" didn't make the studio cut but should appear on his Prince TL mixtape which will be out this fall.

I don't have (no particular one)
I don't see (no particular one)

Just don't pick up the telephone line
Sticks and stones can break my words

- Artemis J

HOT OR NOT: Waka Flocka

Waka Flocka's music is perfect for when doing cardio or trying to stay awake when driving on the MassPike. This time he's linked up with Roscoe Dash, Gorilla Zoe, and Chrissa for a track that could be featured on any
Space Jam remake soundtrack. But hey, what do you think? "Swish" is rumored to be on his upcoming album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans, & Family that will be out later this summer.

Ball like I'm Jordan, ball like I'm Kobe
Put some defense on me (swish)

All I do is ball, game over b*tch
I bring that pain ask cane I'm on that nova shit
On my Frank Ocean shit I'ma need a jersey please
Smoking on this strong like my blunt is full of Hercules

New Music: The Cool Kids – Swimsuits feat. Mayer Hawthorne

Yo! Mayer Hawthorne is all over the place right now. Here he is with The Cool Kids on a nice summery song called SWIMSUITS off their new project When Fish Ride Bikes. HA. well, i can dig it.

New Music: Mayer Hawthorne - Love In Motion (Produced by SebasiAn)

Yo! A new sound from one of my favorite singers out right about now. Heres something he worked on with French artist SebastiAn on off an album called TOTAL. This track, Love In Motion is pretty retro like you would expect from Hawthorne, but i mean like Prince and not Sly and the Family Stone. But i dig it. bout to be on MY summer playlist.
